Clear financial reporting, stronger audit readiness, and CPA guidance for mission-driven organizations.

Nonprofit Audits & Reporting in Carlsbad, CA

Nonprofit organizations carry a different kind of financial responsibility. Your reports do not just serve management. They inform boards, donors, grantors, lenders, auditors, regulators, and the communities you serve.

Amato CPA helps nonprofits build cleaner financial reporting, prepare for audit and review requirements, improve documentation, and make better financial decisions throughout the year. Based in Carlsbad, Brian Amato, CPA, brings 25 years of tax, accounting, reporting, and advisory experience to organizations that need clarity, accountability, and practical support.

Nonprofit Accounting Needs More Than Basic Bookkeeping

A nonprofit can have accurate transactions and still struggle with reporting. The real pressure shows up when the board wants better visibility, a grantor requests support, an auditor asks for schedules, restricted funds need explanation, or leadership needs to know whether programs are financially sustainable.

A Practical Process for Cleaner Nonprofit Reporting

1. Understand the Organization - We review your programs, funding sources, reporting requirements, accounting process, and current pain points.

2. Review the Financial Foundation - We look at financial statements, reconciliations, charts of accounts, restricted activity, documentation, and reporting habits.

3. Identify Reporting and Audit Gaps - We flag issues that could create confusion for the board, management, donors, grantors, or auditors.

4. Build a Clearer Reporting Package - We help organize financial reporting around decision-making, accountability, and audit readiness.

5. Support Year-Round Improvement - We provide ongoing guidance so reporting becomes a management tool, not a once-a-year cleanup project.

Two Ways We Help With Your Audit

"Audit" gets used loosely, so here's exactly what Amato CPA does and where each option fits.

Formal engagements we perform. We issue financial statement audits, reviews, and compilations, including single audits under Uniform Guidance and Yellow Book (GAGAS) audits for organizations that receive federal funding. These are the reports your board, lenders, grantors, and regulators recognize. An audit gives the highest level of assurance and is what most funders require; a review gives limited assurance at a lower cost; a compilation puts your numbers into presentable statements without assurance. If you're not sure which one your situation calls for, that's the first thing we'll sort out together.

Audit readiness for organizations audited elsewhere. If your audit is handled by another firm, we can get you ready for it: organizing records, preparing schedules and reconciliations, cleaning up the chart of accounts, and closing documentation gaps before they turn into audit delays. We'll also coordinate directly with your auditor so the process runs smoothly.

One important note. Professional independence rules mean we can't do both for the same organization. If we perform your audit, that's our role. If we prepare your books, design your controls, or get you audit-ready, your audit is performed by an independent firm. Either way, you get CPA-level work; we just keep the two roles separate so your financial statements stay credible with everyone who relies on them.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do you perform nonprofit financial statement audits?

Yes. Amato CPA issues audit opinions on nonprofit financial statements under U.S. GAAS, backed by roughly a decade of nonprofit audit experience and reporting under ASC 958.

  • What is a Single Audit, and does my nonprofit need one?

A Single Audit is required when your organization spends $1,000,000 or more in federal funds in a fiscal year. That threshold applies to fiscal years beginning on or after October 1, 2024 (it was $750,000 before). It covers both your financial statements and how you managed federal awards.

  • Do you perform Yellow Book (GAGAS) audits?

Yes. Extensive experience with Government Auditing Standards, including Single Audits of federal awards.

  • What's the difference between an audit, a review, and a compilation?

An audit gives the highest level of assurance and is what most grantors and lenders require. A review gives limited assurance at lower cost. A compilation organizes your numbers into statements with no assurance. We'll help you figure out which one your situation actually calls for.

  • Our grant or funder requires audited financial statements. Can you help?

Yes. Many grants and government contracts require an audit, and we deliver reports that meet funder and Uniform Guidance requirements.

  • Can you help us get ready for our audit?

Yes: organizing records, preparing schedules, and identifying gaps before the audit begins. One note on independence: we either audit your organization or prepare you for an outside auditor, not both.

  • Do you prepare Form 990?

Yes. Form 990, 990-EZ, and 990-N, coordinated with your financial statements. (For the same independence reason, we don't both keep the books and audit the same organization.)

  • What financial statements does a nonprofit need?

Under U.S. GAAP (ASC 958), the core statements are the Statement of Financial Position, Statement of Activities, Statement of Functional Expenses, and Statement of Cash Flows, plus notes.
